TAKE ACTION

COMPANION ANIMALS ARE NOT GARBAGE - Tennessee currently is host to several animal "dumps" where animals may be left in junkyard bins marked "Small Dogs", "Large Dogs", "Cats" and "Kittens". You can drive your car right up to the doors and tidily discard any animals you don't want. The Smyrna bins are located in an unattended landfill where an officer comes by twice a day to check the boxes. There is no way of preventing someone from putting a cat in with the dogs and animals may attack each other in the bins due to stress.

Please contact Governor Sundquist at dsundquist@mail.state.tn.us

Photos of the bins can be seen at: http://hometown.aol.com/binbuster3/page/index.htm

MANY PUBLIC SCHOOLS - did segments on the Iditarod this year. The Iditarod is the dog sledding race USA Today referred to as "Ihurtadog" due to its inhumane practices including cutting the vocal chords of dogs who bark too much and chaining dogs on tethers as short as 4' outdoors year round. Each year at least one dog dies running this unnecessary race. Did your school or your child's school teach that this event was a fun form of entertainment? Are you a concerned NC resident who just wants to make sure this doesn't happen in our schools? Write to the North Carolina State PTA and politely ask that they keep animal cruelty out of public schools and thank them if they have already made the choice to keep the Iditarod out of our schools.

GREAT APE CONSERVATION ACT - Senator Jim Jeffords (R-VT) has introduced S. 1007, the Great Ape Conservation Act of 1999. This bill establishes a federal fund from which grants would be made to approved projects in Africa and southeast Asia that conserve great apes in their range countries. We face un uphill battle in trying to pass the Great Ape Conservation Act because many of the legislators who hold positions of power are not supportive of wildlife protection bills.

North Carolina Residents, contact your senators at:

STOP DISSECTION - Tulsa Commiunity College has a College for kids program for elementary school students ages 4-8. They are teaching dissection this summer. They have ordered grassfrogs, earthworms, cow eyes, grasshoppers, and various instruments for use in the program. Please tell them that this is unnecessary and teaches young children a general disrespect for animals.

TELL THE TODAY SHOW CIRCUSES ARE NO FUN FOR ANIMALS - The Today Show ran a lengthy piece on the Ringling Brothers espousing their "commitment to saving endangered species". The breeding centers made comments like "we need to do this so they aren't extinct in THIS country". Please tell the today show that circus tigers and elephants have little to do with natural ecosystems and the preservation of species. Elephants are trained by being beaten with bull hooks and tigers may suffer from the stress of long hours in confinement and travel. Remind the Today show of Ringling Brothers extensive history of USDA violations and the death of Kenny, the baby elephant who died after being forced to perform when ill.
